So far it is going OK and I think is making me think a little more every day than just giving up one thing. I have done that before, namely chocolate, and after about a week, I don't really miss it or think about it much anymore. But just like coffee when I was pregnant, the minute Lent was over, I was back to chocolate as it is one of my best friends and I just like it.

So I have cut up slips of paper and put them in a Tupperware and draw out one each day. I have two chapters of the Bible in 2-3 chapter chunks, sending cards or notes, calling friends and family, giving up FaceBook and Twitter, no chocolate, snacks, meat, etc. Whatever I pull out is what I do for the day. Last week was all Bible readings. This week has been everything but that. I draw first thing in the morning because one of them is to not have cereal that day. Seems like a little thing, but I like my routine!

Also, enjoy the new family pictures. I haven't been very good about my blog, but I love the pictures that Jamie Bloom took in November. Check out her web page, infullbloomphotography.com. Happy Birthday, Kyle! It is amazing how you look pretty much the same as you did at 28. Blake and Paige have changed a little bit, and there was no Abby for that picture. Kyle is in St. Louis on business so won't be home for his birthday. She had some small ones at her graduation.

Kyle, Abby, Derek and I traveled to Kyle's sister's in Denver - actually Centennial, for Thanksgiving. Russ, Paige, and Neelly had to come separately since babies take up a lot more room proportionally than their size. Jenna, Lori's daughter, and Neelly are getting acquainted. ( And 1/2 of Austin in the picture)

I didn't take a bunch of pictures and didn't realize it until we were getting ready to go to Austin's playoff football game. He goes to Grandview High School which is really close to their house. Grandview was playing Columbine in the semi-finals. Below are Lori and Brad all decked out as Wolf parents. Kyle got up at 5:30 that morning to help feed the team at 7am. Their game started at 11am.

I was impressed with the number of people at the game. Brad said it was one of the bigger crowds he had seen at any game. Usually the bigger the school, the smaller the following. In Colorado, 5A is the largest classification. I think Brad said there are 2600 in Austin's high school.
We had a great time and even though we didn't go up into the mountains, there was a great view of the snow capped peaks from Lori's house. The weather was warm enough to be outside without a jacket which is always good. We did a little shopping on Friday, but mainly visited, played games, and watched ballgames.
This weekend I went to Manhattan on Saturday to keep Braden while Tamara was giving a horse riding lesson. Blake was at his 151st bachelor party. My goodness, surely his friends will all be married soon!

Braden and I first went to Hobby Lobby to get fabric for stockings and some Christmas things. He was a good boy in the cart.

Note to his parents, I did use the cart cover thing behind him until he had to get out for a bit and then it went behind him.

Then we were going to go to the zoo in Manhattan, but they don't open until noon during the winter and I thought that was too late to have a good time and take a nap. So we went to McDonalds for our treat.

Note to parents - he had milk instead of pop. The downside was he wanted to hold it himself and that wasn't so successful. Also you can still faintly see the mark on his cheek which is a bite from a boy at the babysitter's. Better the bitten than the bitee I guess.
In the evening, I fixed soup and we went to Paige and Russ's for the KSU game. Neelly was really excited even though she forgot to wear purple. I told Paige I have a hundred pictures with this expression in different outfits.
That is the halo on her head. Kyle guessed she was Dairy Queen which I thought was kind of clever. They received the grand prize of a chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn dinner. We thought about asking later trick-or-treaters if they would like a chicken fried steak, but decided to keep them for ourselves, and the crew pretty much wiped out the gravy and potatoes.
Abby also came home for Halloween - actually for a haircut. Unfortunately, after her haircut she looked like this.
She pulled over to let the flashing lights get to the place it needed to go, then they pulled in behind her. So she was going 27 in the 20 and is $85 poorer. The rest of us have spent quite a bit of time feeling really sorry for her.
I'll be hopping tonight answering the door. Derek is in Industrial Engineering and will wait to see where she ends up. He is from Yates Center and they have a lot in common. He is a FarmHouse man which fits well in our family and an old 4-Her. Welcome to Derek! Hope he is ready for us.
I have to wait one more day for Modern Family and The Middle. Colby and Bridgette got me started on these when they talked about DVRing them since we met for our classes every Wednesday. Now that we are done, they are not to be missed shows. Eric Stonestreet wearing a PowerCat lapel pin to the Emmy's was just icing on the cake. A couple of new shows I have watched are:

1. Up All Night

I thought I might like this show given the recent additions of Braden and Neelly to the family. However, I thought it was terrible. The parents must have used a lot of bad language because they put bleeps in front of their mouths like that was supposed to be funny. I didn't make it a half hour with this show.

2. Two Broke Girls

I thought this one last night on CBS was kind of funny. The blond has recently lost a bunch of money and the dark haired girl never had any money. The work as waitresses in Brooklyn.

3. Two and a Half Men

We watched this last night. It was funny only if you like thinking about Ashton Kutcher running around naked in a house, and maybe you do. Not sure I did.

Tonight - Glee, Parenthood, Body of Proof, Biggest Loser, my DVR will be spinning!Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18166423475480753832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4646121938844937599.post-80251663785272311802011-09-11T11:15:00.002-05:002011-09-11T11:15:42.730-05:00ThoughtsWe went to Morganville this afternoon for the parade to celebrate the town's 125th anniversary. We have a lot of memories of being so close to Morganville and Kyle and the kids all attended grade school there. Kyle's family even lived in town for a while where he and his sister had a successful lawn mowing business at a young age. Paige and Neelly also went and we were remember how $.25 could buy you a pop for ceramics class and I think the class was only $.75 or so. The kids were at best, only fair painters, although Abby had a little more promise. I have some lovely pitchers that can't seem to find their way to Blake and Paige's homes.

Also have thought about 9-11 and that day at school. One of the paras in my room came down the hall between the first and second hour classes and said a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. I turned on my Channel One TV and the newscasters were still unsure about what happened. It was hard to decide what to do with the kids since we didn't necessarily want to alarm them but knew by later in the morning that history was being made. I had the TV on for about half of each hour for the 7 and 8 graders but also gave them some quiet work that they could do if they didn't want to watch. We had some really good discussions about what was happening and what the USA reaction might be. These kids are now 22 to 24 years old. Abby was in 6th grade and I didn't have 6th graders at that time. I don't remember that any parents came to pick kids up that day but I suppose a few did. We did not have the open house that night that was scheduled. For my students now, they were born but so small they don't have the memories of the day.

I think I have finally talked Kyle into going to see the movie "The Help" with me. I said President Schulze went with his wife and said he enjoyed it so I was sure Kyle would too. But with no guns, horses, or fast driving, it would a whole new experience from his usual movie choices. Then we called to see if Blake's were busy since I knew Tamara had read the book too and wanted to see the movie and she went with me. The boys hung out at the house. I really enjoyed the movie, but looking around, there weren't too many men. A few high school boys but I chalk that up to they were with a group and were going were the girls were.

Loving the weather.

No more thoughts.
There was a houseful of people to celebrate with him and he performed well for not understanding what was going on. The two and three year olds who were there certainly knew what it was all about so it won't take long. Like usual, he got many toys and I can well remember the feeling after birthdays and Christmases of where in the world are we going to put this stuff. He finished off his big day by going to the game and spending the first quarter with us, the second quarter with his Bowles grandparents, and the last half with his parents.

Happy Birthday, Braden! According to Pres. Schulz on FB this was the intent.

"EcoCat was always meant to be a fun, local, way to communicate creatively about energy savings. It was never meant to be "national". We rolled it out 12 days ago - and things just took off. We aren't going to do anything which will put K-State in an embarrassing position."

I guess some KC stations really had fun with the super-hero looking woman and even suggested she would replace Willie. Twitter was blown up with all sorts of tweets.

Why did they not take a picture of me? I dutifully recyle paper, plastic, cans, glass, cardboard, and aluminum. However, I'm not sure the average college student will seriously be into recycling or turning off lights.

It took two hours after the introduction for it to be all over the social media. Now that says something about the speed of communication today.
Not sure how it has been 35 years, but do the math. Out of 33 graduating seniors, we had 16 attend. Six have died from various things which seems like too many. We met at Lemon's Park in Pratt and had hamburgers and hotdogs cooked by Joe Berry and everyone else brought a side dish.

I figured we would meet at 3, eat at 5, and be done at 7. However, after it got dark, several of us went to Club d'Est downtown and shared more memories and laughs. When we graduated from high school, it was the tradition to go on a senior trip. The boys wanted to go somewhere and just stay and boat and fish. So we went to some place for that in Austin and it was a dump with the horses and boats down river about 20 miles. We left a day early and went to Dallas/Fort Worth. We had two couples as sponsors and I think probably 25 or so of us ended up going. The smartest thing we did was hire a chartered bus rather than driving it in a school bus. We talked about where we ate, and we couldn't even remember anything except McDonalds. Bless our sponsors! It is a little hard to tell, but there is a person at the rear of the boat behind the swan peddling the boat. We declined to pay money to taking this little whirl around a small pond, but I think the swan boats are something Boston is known for. We did ask a person on the bridge to take a picture of the four of us.
Then we went into Beacon Hill to find a place to eat. We did like Rachael Ray tells people to do and went into a store to "ask a local" where to eat. She directed us to the pub that was definitely one full of locals, not tourists. I also took a picture of the row houses on Beacon Hill. We saw a real estate advertisement where some of the homes were being advertised at $3.9 million.
Actually, the outside is the only thing that looked like Cheers, but is was definitely full of tourists. Jackie and I found Norm to take our picture with.
This is where the ponchos would have come in handy. Instead we bought Red Sox ones for $10 each. After a rain delay, we stayed until the seventh inning. It was fun to be in such an old, historic stadium.
There were quite a few people on that part of the campus and it was interesting to look at the old buildings. We refer to it as "our time at Harvard". We also went to their bookstore/spirit wear store, The Coop, and ate while we were in the area. To get around, we figured out the subway system which was pretty easy and definitely cheaper than cabs for the trips we took.
These gravestones are so old it is difficulty to read the inscriptions. Also I noticed that the stones are turned every which direction. In the midwest, we tend to have the graves so the coffins are running east and west. These are in rows, but around the edges are markers that run the opposite direction.

It was an amazing, high energy show. We were one row back from where they handed out ponchos to the audience in case it got messy and things flew out into the audience. We nabbed a couple of ponchos from the row ahead of us just in case, then wished we had taken them with us for the next night.Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18166423475480753832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4646121938844937599.post-30757095765180524912011-08-13T17:24:00.000-05:002011-08-13T17:24:30.881-05:00Boston - Day 1It has taken me a while to get the pictures uploaded from my phone and camera, as we have been back for a week. We had a great time in Boston and then exploring the rest of the New England states. We covered all six states in 800 miles but the whole area is about the size of half of Kansas or less.

After we landed and found our great place to stay, we went to the Union Oyster House. You can see on the plate it was established in 1826. The streets are narrow and the ceilings inside are low. We had a variety of oysters, in fact, our waitress had never seen anyone order so many. We also tried the clam chowder which was excellent. We ate clam chowder in every restaurant we went to.

Ben Franklin was right outside the door of the Oyster House and for a couple of dollars, you could get your picture taken with him. Jackie and I didn't know when we would have the chance to do that again, so it was worth the $$.

In Boston, they have something called the Freedom Trail. It is a brick inlay in the sidewalk, or red paint on concrete that leads you to many historic sights. They are just in the middle of town for the most part. So we started out on the Freedom Trail. First we saw Paul Revere's house which was old and small.

Then on into the Little Italy and the Old North Church.

What I didn't realize is that there is an Old South Church, and Old East Church, and and Old West Church. The Old West Church is actually United Methodist. I picked up a bulletin at the Old North Church since it was Sunday. It is an active Episcopal church.

However, I think it would be a little weird to go to any of the old churches. In order to retain heat in the winter, the pews are in boxes. Each box has a plate with a name on it. The benches in this church we hard and very uncomfortable looking. Some of them do have padding.

The pulpit is fairly high up in the air, so all would be able to see the minister, just not their neighbors. That would take some of the amusement out of church!

Then we trudged on to Bunker Hill. It is over a river, but we walked (with the guys) so I can tell you it wasn't that far. But it was uphill. I can imagine the revolutionary men rowed across the river, fought, and were home in time for supper. I guess in my mind, it was still an open field a distance from Boston, but no, right in the middle of a town now.

We went back down the hill to a tavern advertised to be frequented by George Washington for some liquid refreshments and calamari, then we called a taxi. After that, we ate our first lobster of the trip.

Yes, it is messy, but I don't think we really needed the bibs, just more napkins. This guy was a little smaller, but very tasty.
